Some more snipits from First Grade Journal

Oh my word. I wish I could be inside her head!

Dear first grade journal,
I'm a kid and I should not have a job. This is why- I am not an old granny! There I said it.
Your friend,
Layla

Dear first grade journal,
Today really was an ants life! I woke up and I felt really weird. I was an ant! And I was smaller than a rock. And I know just what to do I just have to act like an ant.
Your friend,
Layla

Dear first grade journal,
The other night I saw a twinkling star. I closed my eyes to make a wish. I wish that I was a fairy. I wished it because Tinkerbell is small. Other things I would wish is I wish I would be queen of the city. And I wish I had a fish. And a bunny.
Your friend,
Layla

Dear first grade journal,
Have you ever lost a tooth? I have. Let me tell you what happened. I was resling (wrestling) with my uncle. Then I fell on the floor and my tooth came out. And guess what, it was at Disney World! And Tinkerbell came not the tooth fairy! (true story)
Your friend,
Layla

Dear Mommy and Daddy,
I know that you don't think I should buy a phone. I think I should buy a phone and this is why- phone's are populer (popular!).
Love,
Layla

Dear Red Ridinghood,
Don't go in the woods and stay away from the wolf. He could kill you! Bring a shotgun.
Your friend,
Layla

Dear first grade journal,
First grade is just to (too) easy for me.
Your friend,
Layla

hahahahaha

Cale B.

We got an official/written ASD dianosis!

That exclamation point isn't there for excitement, it's relief.
Even though two child psychologists, our pediatrician, two special educators and a child development specialist all refer to him as having autism, it's been a bit of a fight without a written dx. This is going to make everything much easier when it comes to school, services, insurance, etc.

Plus, can I just say that I finally feel validated. There are obviously some things that Cale does really well (his verbal skills, for example), but there are other things he/we REALLY struggle with. It's been a bit of a rough road, from a judgement standpoint, to fight for him. Because he is high functioning in certain areas, we've had many comments suggesting that we are "pushing" this label on him (PLEASE tell me WHO would ever WANT that for their child?!) or that he just needs a few good spankings (I assure you, that will not work). For some reason, having the "official" dx makes me care much less about what others think is/isn't going on with my child.

Not only do the "experts" have our backs, they are going to do something about it.
We are basically getting a prescription for a behaviorist to come to our home and work with him/us regularly. We are knee-deep into the sleep study, and it's going well. After the sleep data from the next 10 days have been recorded and evaluated, we will meet with a sleep educator to address those issues.

This is all good progress!

ETA: The lead autism specialist we are working with at Vanderbilt is not an advocate for medicating children. However, she has asked us to consider medicating Cale to control his aggression/mood swings. I am typically not a proponent of medication for children, but I also know what I deal with physically every day and we could both use some relief from that. I would love to hear from other autism families who chose to medicate or chose not to.

One last stop- Memphis!

:Ugh. Take two. Something happened when I hit "post" yesterday and this was deleted. Whine. And I'm pretty sure yesterday's was written much better, ha:

The babies... err... little kids (eek) were born in Memphis and we have always wanted to take them back to see it. I've actually never been to Memphis myself, only driven through.

We had planned to stop for lunch on our way to TX, but our timing was off so we just kept trucking. I was DETERMINED to stop on my way home. And as I've already mentioned, I have no rules when it comes to how long it takes or what time we get there.

We were making GREAT time and ended up in Memphis right around lunchtime! We stopped to eat, then decided to walk down Beale Street. Then we went to the Rock N Soul museum, listened to live music, shopped... three hours later, we got back in the car! It turns out... I love Memphis.

:Dancing in the street. At least there's music this time!:

Being in this city with so much history, very cool. Being in a city with so much history and teaching my littles where they came from, very very cool.

The kids actually got really into the museum! They were so cute with their little headphones walking around (and bonus! It was good number and letter practice entering each exhibit to listen). Even at four years old, it had an impact. When we left, B said "Mommy, did you see all those cool black people?!".

This is where they come from.

Next stop- HOME.
